Enrique Andrés, Ismael Puerto - Stop wasting nodes! A surgical way to make overcommit on Kubernetes
In a large organization, developers shouldn’t manage infrastructure complexity. Most configurations are predefined, allowing teams to focus on code instead of cluster tuning. Our challenge was that Kubernetes nodes appeared fully used while much of their capacity remained idle due to oversized resource requests. With the k8s overcommit Operator, we introduced dynamic overcommit to improve node utilization, reduce infrastructure usage for non critical workloads, and keep critical services stable, all automatically. This open source, vendor agnostic operator applies fine grained overcommit policies defined through CRDs and enforced by validating webhooks. Policies can be applied at pod, namespace, or cluster level, ensuring safe and consistent optimization across any Kubernetes distribution. Attendees will learn how overcommit policies enhance compute efficiency and stability, especially during high demand events like Black Friday in a retail organization.
